The Dragon Models Ltd. 1/35 Panther D w/Zimmerit, #6428, overall is an excellent kit. Although the kit has a copyright date of 2021, many of the sprues included in the kit seem dated. For example, the plastic barrel is two halves. Each barrel half also has a bisected muzzle molded along with it. Although the kit includes the parts for the machine gun mount and rail for the commander's cupola, the kit does not include an MG 34. The instructions provide no steps for installing any of these parts. The kit even provides the ammo bag that attaches to the mount, but no instructions are provided for installing that part either. Fortunately for me, I had a spare MG 34 from another kit that I was able to use on this build. Another omission from this kit are the parts to build the towing cables for this vehicle. So, it was back to my spare parts stash to find some tow cable terminal parts. I also used speaker wire to make up these tow cables. Another deficiency regarding this kit is the pioneer tools lacked hollow tool clasp detail. Dragon uses a different instruction format in response to criticism regarding their overly complex and busy diagram drawings in some of their other kits. The instruction format in this kit uses grayscale AutoCAD images which threw me off a bit. I had a difficult time attempting to make sure the Magic Tracks were installed in the correct direction as the grayscale AutoCAD image showing this step was very poor. Single link track assembly was time consuming, however, I was impressed with how these tracks went together and what they looked like after they were installed. Each track was the correct early type without ice cleats. These Magic Tracks also had molded on hollow guide horns. This negated the need for me to have to purchase aftermarket tracks, which is what I had to do with my Meng Panther A and Panther G builds. The panther tracks in those kits required the installation of two guide horns per track link. No thanks. The photoetch engine grill screens had extremely fine mesh patterns which I thought might clog during airbrushing, however fortunately this did not happen. The Zimmerit texture is excellent and looks true to scale. The kit included thin aluminum metal panels to make the side skirt armor, unfortunately, I had to modify the end panel pieces to make them fit properly on their mounts, by deepening the open notches on the edge of those panels. Other than these issues, the parts fit was precise. Decal selection only provides for two paint scheme options. Due to the Zimmerit texture upon which the decals are installed, the use of Micro Sol is highly recommended. Fiddley assemblies were minimal compared to Dragon's 1/35 Tiger 1 kits. This kit is recommended for intermediate to advanced fine scale model builders with airbrushing skills.
