Reviews : AMT 880 Lowboy Trailer with load

This AMT kit is actually the easiest one I’ve built to date. The pieces fit great, very little flash, and the instructions are pretty good. I was missing one piece but it was a easy to make piece and you can’t even tell its a substitute. I didn’t like the kit supplied decking, so I made a deck out of basswood strips and Plastruct angle pieces, the wood was stained with Tamiya flat brown paint thinned to a water like consistancy. The rear metal decking was too plain so I added safety tread embossed styrene and painted it Tamiya metallic gray. The trailer was painted a custom yellow made by mixing Tamiya flat/ gloss yellow and yellow green, for a “ construction yellow” finish. The chrome wheel rims were de-chromed with Awesome cleaner/ degreaser and painted the trailer color. The decals are scavenged from the parts boxes and some of the kit decals were used. The load supplied with the kit was not used, an AMT “construction dozer” was substituted and the finished combo is impressive. All in all this was fun build with no problems and the trailer looks great paired with an AMT semi.

Heavy mold lines and several areas of sink marks. Most will clean up well with putty/sanding. However, the leaf springs are troublesome regarding cleaning off all of the flash and mold lines. The flash is somewhat excessive, but comes off quickly with a good hobby knife. Careful attention needs to be paid to the order of installation for the frame to ensure the bed is square when finally assembled. Tires are of excellent quality, good mold and detail. The plastic takes glue well and will set up rather quickly. the rear deck needs fitting prior to final glue up and the suspension attachment to the frame needs some attention with putty and careful mock up prior to the final application of glue. Rather simple kit, and can be assembled quickly by a novice, just need to pay attention to the instructions.

This was a nice kit and a great compliment to my California hauler. Even though it is an older kit, there weren't any fit issues and there was very little flash that needed to be cleaned up. The decking is white plastic with wood details molded in. To make the kit really pop, I'd recommend not using the supplied plastic and using thin pieces of balsa wood and staining it. It looks more realistic and takes the hassle out of trying to paint a realistic wood look. I would also look into a new load as the one supplied with the kit is a little outdated. I would recommend this kit to anyone who is a fan of building semi models.

I enjoyed building this kit. It helps to have some AMT experience for this kit. Would NOT recommend this for beginners. Must get the frame and suspension square for success to line up deck panels and attach suspension to frame. Good size work area with a mat that has a grid pattern helps immensely! As far as the real world is concerned, this trailer appears to be well designed. From my collection, I could fit any semi tractor and a trailer on this with the rear duals supported by the deck. Great addition to any semi collection!

This is the second lowboy trailer I am working on, as I dropped the first one as I was moving it to another bookcase. The assembly of the trailer frame is a challenge to build,but easy by following the instructions.They are easy to use as the drawings are laid out in a good way. The build should be great as I am doing all the sub assemblies first then the major parts should go together easily. Once the major parts are glued together it will be a chinch to paint. If you want a lowboy trailer, then get this kit.

Awesome kit. The load is fantastic. Assembly goes together well. It is an older kit and might have some flash. So what! Never a big deal at all, it comes off so easily. I see some people winning and crying about that. This kit is so cool that you can put anything on it like the Cat Bulldozer, another truck or anything you want. I combined two of them and got a four axel trailer. This kit is a must have for the truck lover. Highly recommended.

This kit is somewhat easy to build and assembles well, if you take the time to test fit everything. The fact that is comes with partially chrome wheels is a big plus. The only negative with this kit is the payload it comes with....the items are a bit outdated. Look for some heavy equipment, a shipping container or an Army tank as the payload. What is nice about this kit is that you can build this without the bobtail.

Once again, I'm disappointed in AMT. Tons of flashing, parts not fitting correctly, terrible instructions and worst of all, the instructions are incorrect for parts placement. If you follow the instructions, the kit won't assemble. This kit is for very experienced modelers, because you are on your own for assembly.

Another great/detailed re-issue kit. This kit features electrical equipment that you could mount or as I've seen several builders do -- using as a heavy equipment hauler. This is a rare kit to find - (always available on Hobbylinc). If you enjoy building model trucks - this trailer is a must have.

Kinda gettin’ tired of kit bashers. I was there once myself. Good kit with some minor fit issues. Deal with them and move on. It’s called modeling. If you want no issues, buy something from IKEA. Built this up in a little over two days time. Suspension is a little fiddly, take your time.

very nice build , found that i can use several pieces to build other units . that why i ordered 2 . will submit photos when i can figure out how from computer

I had one of these along with a AMT moving on tractor, I loved that kit, it was easy to put together, I wish I still had it!!!

This is an older kit, I first built it in the 70's, still a good kit just needs some aftermarket to update it.

Great trailer with very good detail fit and finish. Can be used in many ways to carry just about anything.

Some clean up needed and a little extra attention to alignment of parts but nothing to complain about

Overall easy to follow instructions, the trickiest part is getting the frame straight.

Nice model, I'm building it for the second time, good model to add to a collection
