Reviews : AMT 1968 Shelby GT500

AMT did a solid job with this vintage kit. The kit includes different engine options and a precut outline under the hood for the Shelby engine. I discovered the outline too late in the build and had already painted the hood. What the kit lacked in decals it made up for it in details. I decided to add my own gages that were ordered from Hobbylinc, and I was pleasantly surprised by the raised wood grain on the dash. The kit also featured raised lettering for the exterior badges. I wished the badging was a little more raised. I also added aftermarket rims, but the rims in the kit were perfectly fine. Everything was going perfect until I got to the rear end assembly. The rear lights barely had enough exterior clips to glue it to the rear end. I did make the mistake of trying to add the bottom fender and bumper too fast, after gluing the rear lights on. I suggest gluing the rear lights on and allowing at least 24 hours for the glue to cure, before attempting to glue the bottom fender and bumper on. I really enjoyed building this kit.

AMT you failed me on one of the most sought after Shelby's of the muscle car era. This kit is a level 2 with a small number of pcs. The rims in my kit were so full of flash, they were not salvageable. They went straight into the trash. There were a few fitment issues and yes they could be resolved to look fairly good. When I started to build my kit (2013) if felt I was at a skill 3 and should knock this one out of the park. Well it was put on a shelf and sat till 2015. By this time my skill set has caught up to finish this big can of worms I open. Once complete, the overall look was great and it was a fight from the middle to the end. The engine bay lacks details in the firewall and on the inner fenders. With no shock towers showing, it has no V brace to the firewall. The interior is a one pcs tub with moulded doors and backseat making it a bit harder to paint extra detail. The decals in my kit were no good and found any newer GT500 decal stripe would work.

I really don't have a lot of good things to say about this model kit the mold seems to be very old there's a lot of Flash a lot of mold lines a lot where the pens were too deep into the plastic that you have to file sand and fill after a lot of work you can make the car look decent but it took a lot of work for me to get it to look like I wanted I did a lot of modification to it I also added a larger rear spoiler and a front spoiler and a hood scoop so I could use the Cobra parts if you use them you have to put a hole in the hood I would recommend that you buy this kit because of the price but you need to be an experience modeler to be able to do anything with it or if you like a challenging kit to customize like I did...

molded in Green . It was molded in color so the younger modeler's could build it with out having to use paint untill they have built up the skill's to do so . you will find some flash now & then some of the mold's need to be retooled a littel . That's ok it take's alot of money to just make one mold for a model . So having a littel flash here and there is no big deal that's part of the hobby is cleaning the part's sanding a littel here and there . If there are any model contestt in your area go to them talk with the people tthat have been building model's for yr's and they will share idea's to help you out . It's a hoby to have fun in I look at it now as making 3D art .

A couple reviews mentioned lots of flash and poor mold quality, this is absolutely correct. I had to cut and re-glue the rear axle leaf spring to get it to fit properly. I also had to do a lot of sanding and test fitting before paint. The front grill and bumper piece had to be really worked to get a proper fit. This is important because it is such a key element to this car. There are few extra parts, I would recommend the stock option. If you get the paint right it's not a bad finished model, just not a great finished model. I can't not recommend it, because it is such a classic car. Just not one of AMT's better models.

I was looking for a quick and easy build that I wouldn't have to paint. This kit stated it was a lime gold Metallic but was pastel green. I spent more time removing the plastic flash on most the parts. Much of the assembly time was spent sanding and fabricating to make parts fit together correctly. The instructions were very vague and not much help. This kit reminded me of the quality of some of the early 50's and 60's kits. If this was a first kit build, they for someone they might not try another. Wrong kit, unless you just need the parts, or you want to frustrate yourself.

Kit had tremendous flash to trim. Parts atached to the sprue trees were joined with thick plastic. Had to trim or sand every part that was attached that way. I use sprue cutters, sand paper and exacto knives. AMT models are not the quality of Revell, Tamiya, Monogram, or any other. I knew better than buy another AMT model, but the price swayed me. I've built five AMT models and over sixty Revell. Amt models are very very frustrating to build. Don't be charmed by a low price.

This was a difficult kit in my opinion. First of all, I did not understand the kit being molded in a light green color. This made painting of the parts far more difficult and required many coats to cover up the green color. Also all of the parts did not fit correctly and required a lot of trimming and sanding. I am not sure if I just got a bad kit or if this is standard for all AMT kits. I am not ready for another AMT kit anytime soon.

Before you start this kit make sure you have plenty of sanding sticks, and that you have a good assortment of files. I didn't take any pictures prior to starting the kit. I wish I did. Must have been a very old mold, lots of flash, almost every piece needs attention. So many mold lines, the instruction are very sparse meaning that the instructions weren't very good. If I remember I will post pictures of the finish kit.

New cast of old mold. A lot of flash to be trimmed and Every part needs work to make fit properly. A kit more suited for beginners or to add this specific car to a collection. An experienced modeler can make this into a nice build. If AMT ever retools this kit and upgrades it, I would build it again, otherwise I recommend this kit only to beginners.

I should have listened to other reviewers. This was my first model in a long time and not going to buy AMT again. Glad I bought a model kit with knife, files etc. So much you have to do before even painting. Got close to the end a found out I was missing the steering wheel, column and part of the exhaust. Also the directions are terrible.

This model was challenging from start to finish. Flash, flash and more flash. He body wouldn't fit flush with chassis of by 3/16. Zero marked mount points for parts like radiator and poor directions. Over all with help of a after-market and photo-etched parts she turned out to be a sharp model. I would build this again. Good luck

Lots of Flash everywhere maybe it's just this kit. But it's really warped poor fit rear axle really doesn't look right it's too bad it's a 68 Shelby and the kit is basically not very good I would only get it if you have to I'm going to look for a different company that makes 68 Shelbys next time

Nice kit but you will do a lot of prep work on almost all parts( flashing). Also, in my kit, seems like parts in the sealed chrome package may be missing( see pictures) I know a m t uses same molds on different 68 mustang kits that have some basic parts. I'll update as the building process progresses. Happy modeling

Got this model at the 40th anniversary of the mustang and was really exitited, but was let down when I opened the box and over a dozen parts were missing!!! The plastic wrap over the box was still on when I bought it so thank you for the bad models!!! If you are going to buy a model kit go revell there way better!!!

This kit is not good for beginners at all. Numerous parts require trimming and don't fit well at all. Be very careful and take your time with this one, otherwise you're going to end up with many gaps and other issues. First AMT I've put together, so I'll be reading reviews before buying others.

Another outstanding kit by AMT and not easy to find. This is a skill level 2 with great detail in all the parts. This is perfect for any Shelby/Mustang fan. Hobbylinc has this kit at a great price and I highly recommend getting this kit. Simple enough that a first time model builder could build it.

I thought it was a good price but this model is terrible in my opinion AMT is not like when built models when I was a teen I'm 74 now I had a lot problems with flash and parts fitting together I did the best I could this is for my Granddaughter she likes Mustangs.

This kit is proving to have great detail! It is a lot of fun to assemble while inspiring tons of research for the perfect color combos. AMT did a good job making the model so you can build at your own pace and build a scale model of your dream car

by Flashey i mean a lot of flash to trim. not one of amts better kits. Body and frame were good but the rear axle and the Front Suspension Were Real Flimsey. would Reccomend but only if your up to a Challenge. well worth it for the Price

this type of kit is what made me avoid amt like the plague in the 80's. heavy flash and parting lines and ill fitting parts. not all parts included for race build. would not recommend for the beginner or novice builder.

I hate to say but the molding was not very good.lots of flashing some heavy and difficult to remove pieces. Rear section did not come together at all I needed some additional putty fill some gaps not for a novice builder

Built it straight out of the box. Very little to no flash from molding. Has options on tires, rims, upper engine, carb, manifold and air cleaner. molded in body color. I painted interior and chassis and clear coat body.

The reason for this review is because I got it for my birthday and when I opened it there was A LOT of flash and I mean a lot you have to be a pro and have the right tools for it to look good. NOT FOR BEGINNERS!

it was a fun build, it did have a lot of parts that needed cleaning up. I like the way the instructions were, very easy to keep track of were I was during the build. It was a slow job, but enjoyed the out come.

With the low parts count I expected a quick easy build but with all the flash and fit issues I had this was a time consuming build. That being said, when you get past the extra work it does build a sharp car.

It's a good replica of the actual «Shelby cobra in the '68 », my problem was with the wheel and exaust system, won't fit at my taste. overall, good to have in the collection.

This one had a lot of flash,parts didn't fit correctly,more than usual sanding.But in the end with some work and patience it came out ok.But I wouldn't recommend this one.

Not a good model but a decent modeler can trim the abundance of flash. Things just didn’t fit well together and there is no color chart. An okay model but not great.

If you can get this kit to go together without pulling your hair out, I salute you. My finished product wasn’t worthy of pictures. Keep shopping.

AMT have great model kits I've been building them for years and they have yet to disappoint me. Great job AMT. Still building great models.

Had alot of fun with this one. Cut out the back fenders and put on some drag slicks turned out pretty cool.

I love this company I've had a couple misshaps but I won't even go to local hobby store anymore

Used big air cleaner and had to cut hole in hood But no hood scoop in kit
