The NEW & IMPROVED B M F......
I have been using B M F (Bare Metal Foil) since it was 1st introduced, in the 70's I think, and have my share of horror stories about it through the years. Some of the issues included things like the foil ripping trying to get it removed from the backing sheet, curling onto itself before you can get it in place on the model and also the lack of adhesion on the model are the most common ones. FAST FORWARD a few decades, and what a difference. The new & improved sheets are several leaps forward to the old stuff. It, most defenatley adheres better. There is, however, some things to consider when using it. 1st,& foremost is to get your mind into the game and have a clean & organized work space. Remember, THIS FOIL IS EXTREMLEY THIN AND REQUIRES A LIGHT TOUCH!!!!!! A couple tips I have for usage is naturally several NEW #11 blades, more times than not I will use the blades WITHOUT the knife handle, some toothpicks with the ends sanded smooth and rounded to burnish the foil into tight spaces. Last but not least is, after you have it in place, burnished down and are satisfied with the results, dip a new Q-Tip into some alcohol and wipe the foil off before the final trimming. I hope this review will help the newer people to the hobby to try & enjoy using BARE METAL FOIL..... ps. having some good old rock & roll on the stereo isn't a bad idea either.....
Beautiful, but can be difficult to use
If you are very patient, this product can give you one of the most realistic metal finishes available. It is very, very thin so it shows up every detail in the plastic underneath. It also shows every flaw in the plastic, including sanding scratches. The model must be smooth to about 320-400 grit before the foil will look good on it. Because the foil is very thin, it is also very fragile. It has to be worked down with a light touch until it is well stuck down. Be prepared to peel off and replace some sections until you get the touch. Works best on bare, unprimed plastic. Great for automotive trim, but these very small pieces will add an extra level of frustration until you get it right. Keep at it, though, the results will be well worth it!
bare metal foil - new improved
I have used this product for 5 years now, but quit using it to try out the new chrome pen that is on the market. after using the pen, I found I like Bare Metal foil better. it may be slower but the results are well worth it. the cost, ease of using it and the finished look just can't be beat. my latest project was the Revell London double decker bus and I used it exclusively. it works great wherever chrome trim is called for. like I said the only draw back is time, it has to be cut, applied, trimmed, and burnished. but in the model hobby, if you rush and don't take the time, your model shows how much to time you spent on it.
Bare Metal Foil Ultra Chrome
I enjoy applying BMF, I look forward to it. No doubt this adds a nice finished detail. BMF takes patience, practice and a soft touch. You probably will mess up a little bit starting out but don't give up. Definitely use a fresh razor blade. I found the blades used for scraping are best. I use a sharpened toothpick point to press it into the detail and the side to smooth it out. I also use the edge of my thumb's fingernail to work it into grooves. BMF is so thin it will show every detail. After I'm done I spray clear coat (Tamiya T13) to seal and give BMF an extra shine. Use BMF it is a great product.
BMF
This is the first time I've ever used this product I think this is a great product it is very easy to use and it looks like real Chrome when finished I recommend it to everybody who would like their chrome trim to look like Chrome it's very easy to put on as long as you make sure that your paint finish is smooth and you have a very sharp knife to trim it with. Very good product with a great finish I will be using this on all my models with chrome trim from now on. Also its good for repairing chrome pieces that are not plated good or damaged when removed from the sprue.
Gives a realistic look
I recently used this after years of thinking it was hard to do, to my surprise it was simple yet fun. It gives a realistic chrome shine to all models. Get yourself some tweezers, q tips, and fresh hobby knife. Measure a little wider and longer than what your covering. Use the q-tip to lay it down nice and smooth plus it helps it stick. Now just take your hobby knife and gentle trace the lines and peal off access and your done . I really suggest this it brings life into my model cars
Requires a little patience but gives very good results
Once you get the hang of it, the New Improved Chrome Bare Metal Foil is a very useful product. I have been using it for a few years on model cars for simulating bright trim and it gives very good results. I have tried the Ultra Bright Chrome version of this product and I DO NOT recommend it. It's a brighter chrome but it's just too thin and I found it impossible to work with. I do, however, recommend the New Improved version.
I am a BMF addict now
buy lots while your getting the hang of using it-it really is a third times a charm process. love laying it on over emblems, name plates before painting (after priming)- shoot the paint let it set, then rub of the paint from the emblem or name plate for a sure chrome looking detail- would highly recommend getting a super sized box of creative swear words for use while learning how to apply BMF. When you get it down you'll love the results
Still the best
I've used similar products from other brands that were cheaper. Of all the brands and DIY alternatives I've tried Bare Metal Foil is the best by far. It has the right amount of adhesive and doesn't mar the paint or leave a residue behind and it's the easiest to trim. Also I've had other products that the adhesive seemed to deteriorate over time but not with Bare Metal Foil. Just spend the extra change and get some Bare Metal Foil.
BMF1 Chrome has been improved
I have used the BMF1 foil for over 20 years. I noticed on the last few batches that it had a sticker that stated it was new and improved. I have to agree. The adhesive is much better and it is less prone to wrinkling. The new BMF1 Chrome is also less prone to curl when you peel it off of the backing than the BMF7 Ultra Bright Foil. You still need to use a new sharp blade to cut it, but the new changes are great.
Difficult for beginners, but still unbeatable
By: e.coxe
This material is fantastic! Although, it is difficult for beginners, once you get the hang of applying it the finished appearance is unbeatable for achieving that shiny chrome look. Have plenty of Q-tips on hand, as they get shredded pretty quickly during the embossing process. And try to save your scraps, because they can be used again to patch small imperfections in your application.
Works great
I didn't use the previous version of the chrome foil, but I found this new improved version to work well. Took a little bit of practice to get proficient at using it, but once you have it down it works pretty well. As the instructions say, just make sure you use a new sharp blade and it makes easy work detailing of chrome/stainless trim, emblems and window trim.
Love this stuff
Great stuff. Use it for chrome trim or cover an entire model. Burnish it down well with one of Tamiya's hard pointed cotton buds. I use it to mask canopies. If burnished down correctly no paint will seep under it. When removing it will leave a light residue that can be removed with mineral spirits followed non-amonia type glass cleaner.
Worth The Effort!!
I cannot overstate how highly I regard BMF. When it comes to drip rail and windshield trim, an average attempt with BMF looks better than my best, steadiest attempt with paint. BMF certainly requires trial and error at first, but once you get it figured out it’s a breeze to work with.
Good stuff
I hesitated to try this stuff thought was complicated but was completely wrong it's very easy and like the look it has better than paint I still use a chrome pen once awhile but this is my new goto stuff jus make sure everytime you use it you use a new sharp blade
Pretty cool
Ive expected this foil to be thick, but it turns out its way tinner...almost like aluminum kitchen foil. Does it do the job, yes it does. Does it looks like real chrome, yes it does. Is it easy to use, of course it is. Would i recommend it, definitely yes.
First Time User
I was amazed at how well this product performed for a first time user. It's forgiving, too. A piece went awry half way down, but another piece welded itself to the first one so well it's invisible at the joint. Wonderful product!
A must have
Ever since I discovered BMF & learned how to properly use BMF, painting trim silver & risking screwing up a nice paintjob are a thing of the past, I'm just happy it seems like BMF has gotten thier adhesive issue resolved...
Excellent
I really enjoy working with this product. Makes it nice to go right over paint, and leaves a perfect line. I just purchased the ultra bright chrome, hopefully its better looking than the chrome.
There is no substitute
I have been using this product for over 20 years. Before I discovered it, I relied on metal duct tape. The only downside to the product is that it does get stale and becomes brittle.
When done Properly, It looks Great
This product is very good, but takes some time to master. I haven't yet, but my results are really pleasing. I can do this much easier than using the chrome pens.
A must have
If you want real chrome you can't beat this. Been using it for years. Just make sure you get the new improved chrome and not the ultra bright chrome.
Chrome foil
After some practice, this product really looks good. A new blade and a steady hand help. Then gentle burnishing w a toothpick and q tip once its applied.
Foil wrap
I still use this foil and i love it. The Chrome markers don't work for me, i guess I'm old school but for me this is the best product to use.
No curling here
By: kenc08
New and improved it really is. The biggest thing I noticed was after cutting it and you pull it off the paper it doesn't curl up on you.
Fantastic stuff.
Great stuff have used it for several years now, worth every penny. Don't let the new improved fool you tho, it looks the same as always
Chrome Foil for Models
First time that I bought this product it was easier to use than I was led to believe would recommend and will buy again as needed
True chrome look
First time ever using this.Takes time getting used to applying it so keep it semi wrinkle free. Found a 101 ways to use this.
Realism
This product has been in my after market kit for years, it is always given great results with any scale model I used it on.
Take care applying and it will look great
I am very impressed with finished product. Do take care of overlap locations when applying as edges will show through.
Great product
Fantastic results with this product. A bit challenging the first time you use it but quickly becomes easier.
Improved Chrome foil
Very excited to be using this soon for my modeling car kit. This will be my first time using these.
Bare Metal Foil
Good product. The 'improved' version seems to be extra thin but just as strong.
Works great as usual
There are many uses for this foil and it always adds a touch of realism to my models.
Chrime
Follow directions accordingly. Finish looks great, easier than painting for certain
Looks like chrome
This sure beats silver paint. Easy to apply & looks just like chrome.
BMF chrome foil
BMF chrome is a fine product. Comes with instruction, most helpfuf.
