The original Estes Mean Machine did not come with a center quick disconnect and the (Re-Issue) is easier to transport. The Re-Issue is up powered to E motors, but I would install an ejection baffle to protect the stock plastic parachute. Upgrade the parachute and shock cord to nylon and install an Estes 24mm motor retainer, part number 9751, leaving out the engine block and then you can use longer grain 24mm motor cases like Aerotech 24/60, or longer cases. I would also slot the BT-60 tube, for through tube fins, cut out new fins and extending the fins to the motor mount tube. F power motors on up can shred standard mounted balsa fins. Use epoxy when assembling and laminate you balsa fins with plain printer paper and C/A adhesive, for no fin flutter, at Max Q.

The Estes Mean Machine is a fun rocket with a big Wow factor. Standing at 72 tall the Mean Machine is one huge rocket. This updated version includes a plastic breakdown coupler which allows it to separate into two sections for easier transporting. Even though this is a skill level 2 rocket it is a very simple and straight forward build. One tip for this rocket is to use epoxy to secure the motor mount into the body tube instead of the directed white glue. The Mean Machine tends to come down hard on the engine hook and mount. This rocket is designed to fly on Estes E engines. It does come with an adapter to use D engines but I find them to be underpowered for this bird.

I have owned several of these beasts and I will say that The Mean Machine is unique among model rockets for a couple of reasons: It is tall - 6 feet sounds tall when you read it but when you are actually loading it onto the launch rod and getting ready to press the button, you realize this thing is a monster! Personally, I think the smallest and only D engine to use is the D-12-3. Any longer delay or lower thrust and you are in the dirt. E12s should scream if your launch area is big enough. It breaks down into 2 sections for travel and is always a show stopper at launches because it just looks really cool on the way up!

The Mean Machine is fun to put together and fun to fly. Unfortunately, the model went well above 800 feet on an E12: somewhere between 1300 and 1500 feet! Under that huge 24 inch parachute, it drifted out of the park and was lost. I recommend a large launch area with little wind, as well as switching the stock parachute for an 18 inch. Learn from my mistake don't underestimate this powerful beast.

This rocket is awesome. Now only is it tall and easy to build but it is great to launch. Under a D engine, the Mean Machine will lumber to the skies. With an E engine, the Mean Machine just races of the launch pad. This rocket never disappoints.

This is a BIG rocket and a crowd favorite. Flew very nicely. It's a keeper.
