Hits the sweet spot for educational use
By: Dan G.
The Estes Alpha has been the most popular introductory Estes rocket kit for almost 5 full decades. The reason is that it represents the best overall combination of build simplicity and challenge, as well as a providing a satisfying launch experience. Easier builds (Ready to Fly, Almost Ready to Fly, and E2X) do not provide the learning opportunities that constructing a model rocket from scratch does. Smaller builds (e.g. Wizard) provide a less interesting launch experience due to their small size. Larger builds (e.g. Big Bertha) provide an even better launch experience than the Alpha, but come at a much higher price. I built my first model rocket, an Estes Alpha, in 1973. Today I use the Estes Alpha to teach 43 junior high school students qualitative and quantitative scientific concepts as part of a STEM program at two schools. I have tried other rockets, but unless the class is experience or of a higher age group, I find the Alpha to be the perfect fit for the entry-level rocketeer between 11 and 13 years of age.
Love the Alpha
The Alpha is just one of those iconic rockets. We bought the 12 pack to share with our friends as it greatly reduces the price per rocket. We also built a few ourselves. The Alpha continues to be one of our straightest flying and stable rockets. It has a very wide motor range with a good flight on an A8-3 (perfect for small fields), a great flight on a B6-4, to an out of sight flight on a C6-5 (you may not get this one back). The box comes with 12 rocket kits, plus a bag of spare parts. The 12 chute seems a bit too large. We made our own 8 parachute and it comes down faster without any damage so far.

We purchased this educator pack for our scout troop. The Alpha is a rocket that I remember flying as a kid and is the perfect first rocket to teach kids about the hobby. Great flyer and recovers well. You cant go wrong getting these rockets for young people looking to learn about this fun hobby.

In our camp for children with cancer, we do alot of extra craft style workshops. Our kids have a blast constructing, decorating and launching these guys.

These rockets were very fantastic and I had no problems with them at all. They are very easy to assemble and the manuals are all very helpful.
Alpha rocket for junior high summer camp

This classic design with parachute recovery is always the most popular at my camps. As usual, patience is needed when gluing the fins.
