AS.51 Horsa MK.I/II/British Paratroops Plastic Model Airplane Kit 1/72 Scale Review
By: Alex Biever
This 1/72 scale kit comes from a well-respected Italian model company called Italeri. I’ve built a good number of their kits over the years and they have for the most part have been good for me. This one in particular is no exception. The pros for this kit are as follows: Even though you only have one paint scheme for this kit called A.S.51 Horsa Mk.I Operation “Tonga†Pegasus bridge 6/6/1944. You have a choice of six serial numbers and the one I did is LH469. The painting illustrations though in black and white have every view you can conceive. That is a plus for me as I normally don’t have that sort of luxury. The majority of the pieces fit well with one or more adjustments. I like how they thought of a little clear plastic stand you can attach to the rear. Which means even though you manage to put 20 grams of counterweight in the front of the glider, it’s still going to be tail-heavy. So thank you very much Italeri very much for that! It also comes with an assortment of glider-borne troops you can paint/build.
The cons for this kit are as follows: The D-Day invasion stripes decals on the wings and fuselage are too big. I had to cut/fold them over to fix this issue. I also found that the illustrations for the paratroops are not exactly well detailed. In other words, when it comes to painting them, how they want you to do it is nonexistent. Although there is one paratrooper painting on the side of the box on what he supposed to look like. It still didn’t help me at all for everyone else.
In conclusion, I give this kit a rating of 4 stars out of 5. Italeri if you’re reading this I highly recommend you do a better job of measuring your decals and adding more detail to your miniature people. Other than that, job well done! If you are a big fan of D-Day and want to make diorama of the nighttime glider landing scene, then this kit is for you! I highly recommend it.

The glider itself is excellent. The figures are specific to Pegasas Bridge. They are excellent but, being in several pieces they are slow to build. This kit is not for beginners, but will produce excellent results. Multiples of photo etched accessories are available for the glider. This is an excellent kit for someone who is interested in Pegasas Bridge.
