Reviews : MPC 1978 Dodge D100 Custom Pickup Truck

Well this is my 3 MPC model in a row, and this one turned out decent. It all starts when you look at the box. Very bright colorful and just inviting you to crack it open. Upon opening you are greeted by a great D100 Dodge truck body and bed that will leave most truck modelers smiling. The model of the truck was great with very minimal mold lines. All the parts trees were great, molded completely and had very little flash on my copy. The kit had some clear and red plastic for windows, tail lights and a roof mounted flasher. All were molded cleanly and clearly. Deeper into the box revealed 4 tires with great tread detail and white lines on one side and plain on the other. There are 4 differnt tire combinations you can choose from. Chrome parts were chromed fairly well and had a rough spot with the fragile trim around the tail lights, even after I glued the red lenses into the chrome trim prior to cutting from the chrome sprue. There is a great decal sheet with a couple of options for door signage, which is always cool to have. The instruction sheet is pretty generic but you get a built model if you follow it. Pros to this kit are, a great truck when finished, extra parts including a minibike, toolbox, floor jack, some tools and some 4 wheel drive parts. (Is there a 4 wheel drive version coming?) Cons to this kit are, some warpage to the chassis that needed some heat treatment so the truck didn't look broken in half, and where the grill meets the top and front of fenders, it looks like it was short a little material. A little body filler helped out there. All in all, was a nice kit and restore a little of my faith in MPC kits. Buy it for a great truck to add to the sea of Chevy and Fords out there.

Ok ... first off: The hood was bent, as though a weight had landed on it, and the chrome tree was bent and broken (no parts broken, though). Box was fine, no crushing - so this had to happen before packaging. Great QC, he said sarcastically .... The bent hood led me to try weathering for the first time - the truck is COVERED with mud from County Road 9, a dirt road, after 3 days of pounding rain... Interior is a tub - bench seat isn't bad, but the doors lack ANY real detail - I used 3D printed resin arm rests and window cranks for some detail. Floor has nice texturing. Dash has nice detail, if you're willing to get in there with a TINY brush.. Gear shift is an ugly chrome beast; I used a VCG Resins shifter. The engine is a bare bones V8 - UGLY. I used a VCG stock Slant 6. The master cylinder is chrome - so heavily plated it looks like a blob. VCG to the rescue again. The bed did line up pretty well with the cab; other body parts did line up - this actually surprised me! I never was able to get the rear bumper on straight; I finally eliminated it; the front bumper is only barely reasonably straight. (I shoulda removed it and used an I-beam...) Both bumpers have a license plate recess, but have DODGE heavily molded into them. I hesitate to recommend this kit, unless you REALLY want a Dodge pickup. It does build out nice, but the journey getting there is torturous. I paired this with a limited-edition compressor trailer from VCG Resins. It came out so pretty, I couldn't bring myself to weather it - the guys came back from County Road 9 to get the new trailer...

This is a re-release from Round 2, and this kit is beginning to show its age. It builds up nice. The fit is pretty good, especially the tops to bottom. Nice and snug. The front windshield is almost perfect (if just a bit thick). The minibike, toolbox and floor jack are neat additions, and make the finished kit unique. The interior tub is dull and featureless. The dash is the interior highlight. The engine is okay, but subpar. The bottom frame is okay. I added some brake lines and the parking brake “Y” to give it something. The generous and perfect decals are really nice. Neat fact – this is the year that Dodge teamed with Mitsubishi to offer a diesel engine in some trucks and even a diesel-powered van! Again, the plastic coming out of China is just awful. I’ve found that wet-sanding the plastic first, before priming/painting lends better results. I don’t really recommend this kit. It’s okay, and certainly the grandfather of the Ram Truck, but this kit is just too expensive for what you get.

This is a nice kit. With a little patience and a some added details you can create a really nice pick up. For the pros you have a front and rear suspension that are not molded into the chassis. Lots of decal options that even have side marker lamps. Also some extras like a toolbox, car jack and a neat mini bike model. The cons are a tub style interior with a bench seat molded in which limits customization. The engine is basic and doesn't even come with a starter. The decal sheet didn't include gauges. My model had a warped chassis and inserting the grille took a lot of patience and putty. Overall it was a fun build and I'm glad the kit is available. Enjoy building your version of the kit!

Bought this kit as it's the closest thing to the truck my Dad had and what I have now. It's a decent kit detail wise but need to remember it's an old kit and not quite Tamiya quality. In any case the kit goes together easily however as other reviewers stated, my frame was also warped. It's a good kit to learn how to deal with warpage issues and fitment such as the front grille. Interior is a bit plain but like I said, it's good for learning creativity in doing vehicle interiors. Nice that it actually has a clear plastic windshield and red tail light lenses too. All the extras like the mini bike don't hurt either.

Good kit for the MOPAR truck guys. To bad its a long bed but with a bit of time and effort it can be cut down to make a respectable short bed fleet side truck ( as I have done ) Although a repop of the old MPC kit , round 2 has cleaned up the molds as this one has very little flash to deal with .As with most old MPC kits the interior deails a shallow and the undercarrage isnt up to modern standards ...but with that said with time and imagination this can be built up to make a good looking fleet side Dodge D100...even if you left it a long bed

I have low expectations with AMT, but wow. Bad. The interior pan mold was incomplete, resulting in me having to use a parts tree for the top of the bench, and a sweater cuff as a seat cover. The bed sat way lower than the cab as well, so I had to hide toothpicks under it to make it the right height. The engine bay is also quite lacking in detail. I'm pleased with the final look, but it came at the cost of my sanity! Note: I didn't purchase this from Hobbylinc, so it's no reflection on them at all, the model was a gift.

Not too bad if you like customizing. It’s a pretty simple kit if you just build it as is, not much detail. I chose to customize it & had a lot of fun building it. I added different tires & wheels, some different decals, & a 2009 Dodge Challenger 6.1 liter engine. The back suspension seemed a little low so I raised it up some. Overall I was quite pleased with this kit, but not sure if I would have been as satisfied with building it box stock. I recommend it. Use your imagination & have some fun with it.

Overall, it's not a bad kit. It has plenty of potential and is a great platform for a custom build like the one I built. The fitment and the molding of some of the pieces left a little more to be desired. The chassis was warped; I was forced to cut the chassis almost in half, bend and glue it to straighten it out. If you are an experienced modeler, this can turn out well, but it will take some tricks and manipulation to make this kit shine.

Can’t wait to start building this truck. The cab and bed are nicely molded with very good detail. Chassis is nice an straight. The rear leaf springs are really warped, will have to take some heat to fix. All the chrome looks good, the grill especially. The extra add on accessories and the mini bike will make this a fun build for sure.This will be a great addition to anyone’s truck collection.

I have been looking for a dodge pickup like this so I can build a custom pick up. It's great good detail and comes with some useful accessories. Shipping was incredibly fast.

This is a great kit. Wish only one thing is that it had the 360 small block like yhe lil red express. But still great kit
