Reviews : Revell-Monogram 1964 Impala SS Lowrider

This is a really nice kit. Fit was good. Cleanup was minimal. Although I had been led to believe that it could not be built in any way but a lowrider, this proved to not be true, because there were additional parts you could choose to use that would modify the ride height. I'm not crazy about lowriders. So, I built mine as more or less, a stock impala. Of course, that also meant that I had to supply tires and wheels. No problemo! Who doesn't have a kagilllion of those in their stash?! Speaking about the only problem I had with the kit (which admittedly was my fault), if it was not for the hood, it would have been done days ago. As it turns out, the diagram of the hood and its trim piece (step 15 part 91) led me to believe that they wanted you to attach it to the front of the hood, where it matched the contour of part 91. This left my hood trim with a big gap between it and the top of the chrome bumper. The chrome was supposed to give the impression of a single undivided piece of metal trim. I took way too long trying to make this work, with all of the normal things, like the radiator or the air cleaner sitting too high, and I just could not understand why the hood laid down in its home perfectly, with nary a gap, but that gap between the trim and the bumper just would not go away. Finally, I was about to call it quits when I took one closer look at the only photo on the box that showed the front of the completed model, and it just looked perfect. It finally dawned on me that the trim piece did not look like it had been glued to the hood at all. It looked like, and this is what I decided to do, to attach it to the top of the bumper area; it fit nicely, with supeglue points at both ends and otherwise not needed, and this was a relief because I was through with trying to glue it to the hood, and now that the hood was repainted, I did not want to touch it with any glue. Unfortunately, there is still a small gap between the back of the hood and the back of the engine bay. Oh well, someday I could add a piece of plastic to the hood, repaint it (oh joy), and it would be near perfect. By the way, look for my photos of the completed model, and recall that I said there was no masking done to get the separation between the 2 metallic colors I used.

Absolutely love this kit. great details, cool extras, goes together really well, an absolute gem. When this model was re released recently I grabbed a few of them, knowing they would not stay boxed in my stash but rather built up, you can never have too many 64s on display! Plus it gave me an excuse to open and build the old release of mine that had been lurking and gathering dust... Plenty of parts and nice decals but 2 of the whitewall tires are so bad i cannot use them. I do have a set of Pegasus tires that will look better. Been wanting to build the 64 from up in smoke just need to find or try to make the hood ornament. Not much clean up on the body. The front passenger fender has a bit of a booger on it but i think i can clean it up. Very nice kit over all. 4 stars for the tires. But the kit is very nice.

Fun build. Tons of different options and goodies. Everything fit together the way it should. Hardly any flashing to trim off and the body mold looked great. No warping.

That low rider impala is the next kit i get. I love the pink but ill do mine in a candy purple.
