Reviews : Revell-Monogram 1969 Chevy Chevelle SS 396

My wife wanted to see a red Chevelle with black racing stripes in my collection because she once dated someone who drove one. I bought a 1970 kit by another manufacturer and was thoroughly disappointed, as I had gambled I might be, due to the inferior QC I had encountered with previous kits from them. The frame was warped so it looked like a dog meeting a fire hydrant with the wheel hopped up off the ground. The interior cabin was warped as well and I could only do so much over the stove burner. So I decided to do this 1969 Revelle kit and replace the one that didn't qualify for display. Revelle usually puts out a good kit, but I must say the craftsmanship and fit of this one was on par with a Tamiya, and that is high praise not given lightly! There was practically no flash so I didn't lose time sanding pieces. It was a real joy to build. I was disappointed to see it didn't come with the racing stripe decals, so I had to modify electrical tape as best I could. It is serviceable. It does come with a plethora of decals to detail the interior and exterior though! If you decide to give it a try, I don't think you'll be disappointed. I did encounter a couple of issues with the instruction sheet. The painting guide identifies both blue and gold as the letter C. I had already painted the master cylinder gold, so the oil filter and bottom of fuel pump wound up gold as well. Additionally, the right exhaust manifold is identified as being painted J which does not exist. Common sense tells you to paint it steel to match the left one! Overall a really nice kit.

Great addition to my collection of Chevelle Builds. I've built every Chevelle from 1965 to 1972 and have not been disappointed except for the 1970 Chevelle. A guy was constantly asking me every month if I was ready to sell my 69 and I finally sold it to him, so I have to build another to put back into my Chevelle collection. FYI, 1964 was the first year for the Chevelle and now AMT/Round2 released a Craftsman Plus version (AMT1426) in April of 2024 with opening hood but no engine, but you do have the option of installing one. Having that one will totally complete my collection.

This is a newer tooling from Revell and the crispness of the details as well as the general lack of flash on the parts makes that point pretty obvious. There's lots of parts to make detail painting easier, with well sculpted details for the engine and interior parts. Fitment is spot-on, the decals are very nice and include lots of detail-oriented decals for the engine compartment, and the stance is excellent without any modifications. This one is a blast to buils and gives you a very rewarding finished product!

This kit kinda built itself. It has very nice details and went together without any issues. The tires were a bit small, but I'm seeing that as a common occurrence as of late with Revell kits. Any Chevy person will like this kit.

I built this kit a couple years ago, and it was a great kit from what I remember. I would definitely recommend this kit if you love them Chevelle’s!!

This is a very nice model to work with. The parts fit together well, there is nice detail and even the decals are easy to apply.
