Reviews : Tamiya Acrylic X22 Clear 3/4 oz

When I'm not using Alclad's Aqua Gloss, this is my chosen gloss clear, especially since it sprays so well and cleans up so easily. Just make sure you're using decent thinner to allow it some time to self-level, either Tamiya's X-20A or the mythical Mr. Color Leveling Thinner (if you can find it). Straight alcohol evaporates too quickly, and can leave a rippled-looking finish. Decals love the stuff, lying down flat for less silvering (micro bubbles), and it's great for sealing them up too. There doesn't seem to be any visible tint when applied in layers, and I've yet to see any yellowing with age. I've used X-22 as a final coat on props, which by nature endure a lot of handling and getting knocked around, and it holds up well. I've even used this to cover a wood display base that I had to make in a hurry, since the usual polyurethane would have taken too long. It came out mirror-shiny after a quick polish, and still looks great a few years later. I can't say for certain how it holds up to UV exposure, since I don't yet have any experience with that, but if that's a concern there are other specialty products available.

Tamiya makes the hobby paint on the planet. Its so easy to work with. The coverage is awesome. At first, coming from Testors, I was hesitant because Testors is so thin and barely covers. Once I used it, it was a game changer. I will be switching all my paints to Tamiya.

I like to put a layer or two of clear on top of something that has been painted silver or chrome- it gives the apperarance of something being enclosed in glass. The paint has good coverage, and is a useful addition to have on hand for that extra detail.

Airbrushed Tamiya X-22 Clear to provide a gloss finish over flat color on an AMT 1940 Ford coupe. Sprayed through Neoeco airbrush with 0.5mm needle, thinned 50/50 with Tamiya X-20a thinner. No issues. Dried quickly to high gloss finish.

Perfect for topping off a Tamiya painted model. I like to build up many light coats, thinned anywhere from 1:1 to 1:2 depending on conditions and the subject. 3/4 oz is more economical than the mini jar.

It's a basic gloss coat for any model to be airbrushed on. Thins easily with alcohol and airbrushes very smoothly. Can be combined with Tamiya X-21 to achieve dull flat or semi-gloss finishes.

Paint to Thinner range 2:1 to 1:1 for airbrushing depending on air pressure, paint volume and distance from subject. Experiment on scrap plastic first. Just OK for gloss clear, not the best.

I think nothing beats Tamiya paint. Polly scale was my favorite but they are no more, so Tamiya is the best. Goes on like silk through an airbrush with a little bit of thinner.

I absolutely love this clear coating. I use it on all my builds. Thinned it with Mr. Leveling Thinner and used it in my airbrush. Definitely worth it and look phenomenal.

Does not affect the decals and you can layer multiple coats for a nice gloss finish. I can also put this over enamel paints as well.

This will be used to give my aircraft instruments that true “glassed in” look. Easy to use with either by hand or airbrush.

sprayed and laid out very well with a .03 needle. It's glossy enough that it really doesn't need a polish afterward.

Smooth pain that dries at a nice rate. Perfect to help seal things and has a nice gloss to it.
