Reviews : Tamiya Surface Primer L White

This Tamiya surface primer is by far the best white primer on the market, in my opinion. It levels out and dries very quickly even though a lacquer (L) product, although I allow a full day to dry before working with it further. It shows where seams may still need sanding out, and when the seam is filled with putty (or liquid thin cyanoacrylate) re-sanded, and re-primed, the repair disappears. I also use this primer for model surfaces that are required to be white. I do not use a white paint overcoat as it holds a high polish alone. As a base coat, both enamels and acrylics overlay it smoothly. I also use the primer L gray version of the product with the same results.

There's a lot more primer in this than what the can and other people may lead you to believe. I have primed almost 7 kits with this and there's still some at the bottom. Granted I took my time and slowly dusted the primer on, but that still means there's a lot of primer in here. I noticed that that the primer is actually very smooth compared to other primers, but is still mostly matte. It is shinier than other primers (ie: Krylon, Testors). But this stuff is much better. Being a lacquer primer, it grips onto the plastic like a shark would bite a fish. Rubbing it will not remove primer at all, and scraping it with anything other than metal wouldn't do much either.

I got back into modeling recently and deciding that I would do everything right (or as right as possible), I decided to use a good primer. I found my solution in the Tamiya Fine Surface Primer. Spray a light to medium coat on each peace that will be final coated. Before applying the final color, I recommend carefully wiping down all primed surfaces as they may contain a fine dusting of primer that dried before it got to the model pieces. Test the surfaces by wiping a finger lightly over them. If there is a light residue on your finger, wipe the surface with a soft or cotton cloth. Do I like this product? Hobbylinc just delivered two more cans today.

This sprays, and dries well just like the Tamiya gray primer, which is great stuff. It takes a bit more to fully cover though. The gray fully covers in about three coats for me, I tried this primer on a chrome piece, and it's not yet fully covered after three coats. I'm really Only using it for adhesion on white plastic, as to not deepen the final color as the red does, but if your planning on using it to lighten up a dark body for a light color, it's gonna take several coats.

Overall, this is the best primer that I have used. I have both the white and light gray. They both are just as good, I have more of a personal preference to the gray though. It helps show any imperfections in the model, and gives a nice even coat as long as you don't hold the can in one spot for too long. I have only had a problem once with paint not sticking to the primer. I would highly recommend this primer.

Great fine white enamel. Always use primer. If you have problems with runs in your paint on plastic it probably has to do with your primer or the lack of primer. Find a primer that's right for you. If it's enamel paint your using find a enamel primer. And so on with acrylic or lacquer your primer should match your paint. I never have runs in my paint. Surface Primer #1

Tamiya fine surface primer provides a very smooth surface on which to apply your color coat. I use other primers like Krylon for all the bodywork but when that is done, this goes on last before the finish. Excellent! It's a bit pricey (the price at Hobbylinc is the lowest I've found) but it's definitely worth it.

This is a really great primer. It helps paint adhere properly and it goes on very smooth and thin. I especially like that it’s white because it makes painting white and other light colors so much easier and it requires far fewer coats. Definitely a good thing to start your sprues off with!

I prime almost everything with either this or the light gray. Can be sanded if necessary. Smoothest surface I have ever seen with primer. Adds color coat adhesion to resist pull up when removing low tack masking tape. Enough in one can to prime several models

This and the gray are my favorites. Spray it, it dries quickly, give it a sand with some extra fine sandpaper and it'll give you a great smooth surface that shows any defect you need to fix. I've never had any problems with it.

The can is a little small for the price, but it beats out every other rattle primer I've used. It covers well, and settles nicely into fine surface details without obscuring them. I just need to see about ordering it in bulk. :)

Tamiya paints and primers are AWESOME....they spray extremely well, lays down great and dries very quickly. If you dont want to hassle with setting up your airbrush, tamiya spray paints are certainly the way to go for a nice finish.

This was my first time using Tamiya White primer. It sure lived up to its reputation. The primer covered well, even over dark plastics. And my finish coat adhered just fine. This will be my go-to white primer moving forward.

This is great for 1st coat/primer for painting a model, especially in a lighter color, such as white or yellow. It gives the paint a better sticking surface and will show and highlight any imperfection that need to be fixed.

I like the Tamiya products and this primer is good, but it was too small of a quantity. I expected to go farther than a couple models, but it barely made it and will buy bulk primer and mix in the airbrush in the future.

This base paint goes down so flat. The can is very convenient and I tend to use only for small jobs as it is a little pricey. For better value for money it is also available in 40 ml bottles that can be thinned .

One of the very best primers my husband thinks because you don’t lose any of your fine detail and it goes. I’m very smooth. Recommended for anything that has a little details that you don’t wanna lose.

Prime everything I plan on painting. Even the parts that are small since helps coverage and less paint needed to cover.Would recommend washing parts first and removing any mold lines for better realiam.

Fantastic primer in general. Goes on thin to get in every crevice and dries in 15. Once dried has a nice smooth texture similar to an eggs shell if you will. Been usuing for 10 years can’t complain.

This primer for my application was pretty solid and my base coat stuck well with even coverage. I'll be using this for future projects. Tamiya is a fantastic brand for every paint I have used.

This primer works very well. I have not had any issues since using this primer. Dries quickly and evenly! It is sand-able to make any paint job very smooth!

I prefer this white and the light gray primer as well. Smooth, covers good, dries fast. Ive used other paints over it with no issues. recommended

This is my go to for primer. Tamiya never fails to please. Use sparingly, not a thick coating, just enough to lightly cover the subject.

Tamiya primer is one of the top primers. Use from the rattle-can or decant for the airbrush … both work great.
