Reviews : Testors Plastic Putty 5/8 oz

This is the best joint and gap filler I have found and used. It goes on very easy with the tube end. It works better if you use a latex glove and apply with your finger. In most cases this works well. I have some what thick fingers so sometimes I have difficulty getting into tight spaces on my models. I usually use the pointed end of a hobby knife for better application in these areas. I recently purchased a Putty Applicator from Hobbylinc as well for just these tight situations. I plan on reviewing it later once I have used the tool. This product comes out in a paste form a bit like toothpaste or silicone caulk. It sometimes will take a few applications to cover a gap properly. It does not dry too quickly which is great so you can work your best to get the excess off with a damp cloth. In those cases where you do get a bit too much you can just sand off the extra. This stuff is usually dry in about 12 hour so you can sand. The only con about the product is it looks a bit odd on the model as it does not have the same look or consistence as the plastic. But much easier to work with than super glue or epoxy, both of which I have used in the past. It does look great after you paint it, can't even tell. I like to use a trick to make sure it blends well. After it has thoroughly dried and been sanded to where I like it, I put a light coat of super glue over it with a brush applicator. This gives it very smooth look. Not sure if this is the best thing to do. Some other more experienced modelers might disagree. It has worked well for me. This is the best filling product on the market for models. Testors has done a great job in creating and formulating this product.

The first thing about this putty, it has an odor to it. It's relatively easy to work with, and the drying time isn't too bad. Like any putty, I like to let it sit overnight. It's easily sanded, and can be primed/painted over. You have to put in some extra work to make sure the surface is smooth before painting, or else you will still be able to make out the gap or seam. The biggest drawback I have to this is the horrible shelf life. The compounds separated in the tube after letting it sit due to not needing it on a few kits. When I opened it up, a semi-opaque viscous liquid came pouring out. Shaking the tube did nothing to resolve this, only a sloshing noise. There was nothing left that was usable in the tube. Other than that one drawback, an overall decent putty. I prefer AK Putty (in the red tube) or Vallejo Plastic Putty. Mr. Hobby Mr. White Putty is an alternative.

My only complaint about this Testors product is the tendency for liquid to form at the end of the tube. I used it recently after it had been sitting for a while and the first squeeze or two brought out a nearly-clear putty. I had to use more than necessary so I could mix it up. It worked OK after I did that and now that I am using this tube heavily and regularly the separation of ingredients is no longer a problem. It does have a tendency to harden quickly when using small amounts, so plan your work, and work fast. Sands up easily and paint adheres well to it, when properly sanded and primed. I recommend it while supplies last, but the Vallejo, AK, Tamiya white and Squadron putties do at least an equally good job of filling seams.

Testors Plastic Putty is a good putty for a cheap price. When I was using it to help fill in some spaces in my F-5 Tiger II model, I noticed that it dried very quickly. (Hint: One must ALWAYS put the lid back on immediately after use. Squeeze gently to prevent a slow pouring of putty that, if the lid is not put back on, will dry quickly and be wasted. However, when I first squeezed the tube, only a clear liquid pours out before the more solid putty comes out. I do not know how to prevent this.) Once the putty was put on the model and smoothed out, the paint went over it nicely with no problems. I would definitely recommend this putty as a good, cheap alternative to other more expensive putties.

I've used this putty for years on my plastic models. It does a decent job in filling smallish gaps but it takes practice to get a good result. For my taste the consistency is a bit too thin. I've found that if you have big gaps or holes to fill you might have to apply the putty twice after letting the first application dry. It will be somewhat brittle when dry, so any exposed putty will easily break off. On the plus side, the color is perfect for painting. The working time is good; doesn't dry out too fast. If you have a toothpick you can get it into just about any gap. I still haven't found anything better for my purposes so I will continue to use it.

Like most modelers, I used Squadron Green putty for years, sadly, it is no longer available. I tried the Tamyia Basic type putty and Testors Putty. Both are equal to Squadron putty: both fill well, both sand well. The only differences I see are the containers. For the Tamyia putty, an applicator tool is essential. The cap is a large diameter and short. The Testors is in the old familiar tube which makes application easier in small areas. The applicator tool is still usable, but may not be always needed for Testors. Do not use either putty as a nose weight because it tends to soften the plastic and may ruin your model. Both will accept paint equally.

To make a good model you are going to need putty because on a the real aircraft you are making a model of there is not going to be gaps in the fuel tanks or wing. To fill gaps you can use gap filling super glue or putty. I like to use this putty because it is water based which means it is easy to sand down which saves time. But it is easy to fill gaps using a damp cotton swab which allows you to get the extra putty off which also means less sanding. This putty performs great at getting in gaps of all sizes and will defenataly improve the looks of your models by making the gaps dissaper. And for the price you just cant beat this putty

This is a really good product. It is easy to work with and can be sanded and cut without a lot of effort required. Compared to other products that I have used in the past, this is the easiest and most cost effective way to go. The only negative thing I can say about this, and this really isn't negative at all in fact, is how quickly it will dry. Be sure to have your plan ready when using this because you will not have time to slow down. However, for people as impatient as I am waiting for things to dry, this is the product for you. I enjoyed using it so much that I recently placed an order for several more.

My first putty project was just as expected, lots of trial and error, scrape, sand, repeat… I also noticed the “clay” and liquid were sometimes separated in the tube and I had to squeeze some out and mix with a toothpick. Other times I was able to squeeze directly from tube. Guess I could have maybe stirred within the tube with a small wire??? Anyway, the putty seems like a good product and its effectiveness is limited by the user’s skill level. ;-) A must have product for those interested in details. Looking forward to another project.

I've tried many of the competitive filler/putty's in the last couple of years. i use putty frequently for professional looking results. this product was around when i was a kid, and at that time, it was about all there was. it remains to this day the one i use most often,because it works great, at much lower price point.i'm trying to use up the other products I've bought and tried, but i keep going back to good old Testor's, and use a lot of it. you can pay more, but this stuff works.

Testors Contour Putty is great for filling small pinholes and mold lines on plastic model kit parts. This putty can also be used to fill in sanding scratches. Apply to the surface or pinholes in small dabs using a toothpick or fingertip. The putty dries quickly when applied in thin layers. It can be filed, pared and sanded using fine sandpaper when completely dried.

Testors, Contour Putty is a good product for filling smaller gaps and seams. Other modeling putty products might be better suited for wider gaps and longer seams, however for a quick fix of small gaps, seams and holes, this product does the job perfectly. Replace the cap on the tube immediately after use to prolong the life of this product.

I love this filler - I've used types and I always seem to buy the Testors. Excellent for filling small holes and gapes. My only gripe is that the drying time is longer then other putties. I found that if I mix a portion with alcohol it cuts down on the drying time by half. I would recommend this product to all modelers.

I have used it for my plastic sailing ships and it works well. It is not too much hard so sanding it is not a pain, but is strong enough for simulate the surrounding plastic. The only cont is that some times the solvent is the first to go out so you need to clean the putty application tool .

This is a great putty for filing in those holes that the model process makes. Fill in the hole and spread out and let dry overnight, then sand smooth. Simple stuff that works great. Water clean up is also a plus. As always, Hobbylinc delivers a fine product.

This is one of my favorite products. It does the job in filling minor holes, and it smoothes out nicely after sanding. One does have to be careful with it's consistency of it being too light. Overall I am very happy to find it here at a good price.

This works great for filling gaps in you model. Dries fast, cleans up easy and is water based. The only drawback is that is has quite a strong odor, so you'll need plenty of ventilation especially if you doing a lot of gap filling.

I've tried both the Tamiya and the Testors putty and personally I find the Testor's one to be better. This putty dries uniformly and not too quickly, making it easier to apply than the Tamiya one. There is also no smell.

Works well. Dries quickly (I try to wait 24 but don't always). Not to strong an odor. Cleans up well too. I just used it on a funny car body and it looks great, bit if sanding and not seams

I've tried other products but keep coming back to this. Nice consistency, doesn't dry too quick to work with, sands easily. Need to order more so I can be sure to always have some on hand.

It's not as good as squadron but for sealing gaps along seem lines and wings highly recommend it doesn't dry to quickly and it inexpensive a must for realistic aircraft builds

I have tried Milli-putty and don't like it hard to mix and just didn't work well for me, The Testor putty is so much easier to use and no mixing is required.

i used it for a while but found something better that i ue on real cars. but i still use this for small items. must need for every builder. drys good and sands ok.

This putty is inexpensive and has a nice buttery consistency. I was unhappy with the chalky Tamiya paste. This is much better, and easier to use.

This stuff is awesome. Goes on nice and dries fast. Fills in gaps perfect and sands off nicely. Highly recommend and you can't beat the price.
