Good for its price
This kit isn't exactly groundbreaking in its own right but it's a high quality and, at least as far as I can tell, accurate depiction of the North Carolina as it appeared during the later years of the war. The fine details aren't the best I've seen on a 1/700 ship, but they're more than adequate and I didn't encounter any major issues with the fitting when putting the kit together. The only thing that required anything more than basic sanding was the noticeable seam between the upper and lower hull pieces, but that can be easily fixed with thinned Tamiya modelling putty. Overall, not the best kit in the world, but it's likely the best 1/700 North Carolina-class BB kit out there and is well priced all things considered.
Upgrade From Aoshima
This kit and her sister North Carolina are good upgrades from the Big Four Aoshima kits which were the only entrants for years in 1/700, absent resin kits. One recalls the Renwal North Carolina/Washington as the only old kit which did the ship justice. Trumpeter does provide decent casting for armament and such, and nice to see the 16 gunhouses moulded decently around the barrels. The Aoshima kits demand a great deal of aftermarket parts to get them away from that blob look of early Aoshima. All in all a good kit for the collector, and half the price of the next step up toward resin ships - indeed, can get the kit at a great price if you are looking diligently!
Had to build this ship
I had to build this model kit. The USS North Carolina was a gift from my uncle for Christmas right before he passed. Needless to say, I saw this and had to do it. It has all the qualities you would expect from Trumpeter. Excellent fit and finish of parts, little cleaning of excess plastic was needed. It is one of those models that comes to life as you build it. Of course at 1/700 scale there is quite a bit of challenge when it comes to building it, small hand tools a plus, especially a pair of reverse pliers. Absolutely love how this looks as completed. You will too.
Getting back into the swing
As a college student with not much time, its been awhile since I've picked up a model. The NC was a good way to get back into the swing of things not only by price tag but by overall model quality. Overall the model is good quality plastic. The directions were good and easy to read and easy to understand for little model experience.
Great kit
All parts fit correctly, detail is pretty good deck is scribed nicely to allow for a great simulated wood plank appearance
