Nice Middle Ground Varnish
By: Andrew
Up until this point I've only used matte and gloss varnishes on my models. Having this in the arsenal is definitely recommended however. Specifically, using it over metallic paints on my planes. I found that gloss over metallic made them look too shinny, cartoonish even. Matte varnishes dulled the metallic entirely too much, to the point where they almost looked gray. This is where the satin varnish shines (pun intended). It gives a slight sheen to the metallic colors, or any color for that matter, but it's not over the top.
Better than Aerosol!
I’m relatively new to airbrushing my model railroad locomotives and cars. But after my experience with the Vallejo paints from Hobbylinc, I am sold on it. This satin varnish has a much better and more realistic look than the enamel (oil-based) paints I have used for years. It has a true matte finish, as opposed to a “cloudy” look from aerosol paints.
Recommend this varnish.
A bit too glossy for gaming minis
I paint gaming miniatures and I find this too glossy to use on fabric, flesh, hair, etc. It is glossier than the finish of Vallejo Game Color, which is also satin. However, it's very good for metallics, and mixing it 1:1 with AK Ultra Matte varnish is a close match to the Vallejo Game Color finish.
great looking middle ground
