Plaster cloth
Very easy to use just cut to the length needed and wet with water and apply to area smooth it out and let it dry. Accepts paint good to cover, but some spots may take several coats of paint depending on how much the plaster cloth soaks up. Overall it makes the process a lot quicker than trying to mix up plaster or paper mache etc.
Layout /Building supplies
Easy to use but very messy. I use vinyl gloves from harbor freight. Very cheap to use and discard. The plaster molds easily irregular surfaces like rocks - stacked wood or any other surface you want to model.
