Reviews : Walthers Merchant's Row IV - Kit - 10-5/8 x 5 x 4''

This is, as the title suggests, one of the best Walthers kits I have assembled. The moldings were all clean, some sanding required but almost no flash. It is very simple. The windows and doors are molded into the walls. This does make painting more of a challenge, however. It's basically just 4 walls, a roof and a base. There's a stairway for the rear but I didn't use it. The window glass comes pre-cut, which is nice. It also comes with a selection of signs, printed images for each storefront AND printed images of blinds and shades for all the windows. So it has a lot of nice extras that you can use, or not. Painting a building like this is always a challenge, though. The secret to painting brick is to use a sponge and craft paint. I masked off each storefront and painted each a slightly different shade. Make sure you do the front and rear pieces at the same time to match to color! Also don't forget to do the inside of the tops of each wall. Once the brick is painted, clear coat it with a matte coat. Then flow on white or grey OIL paint, using lots of thinner, to do the mortar lines. Then carefully paint the doors and windows, etc. Weather with chalk et viola! Merchant's row 4!

I love this model . Lots of detail . Take your time to paint it , use a very tiny brush , the end result will be beautiful . Window shades and curtains are a really nice touch and the store front picture windows really give a real look to the finished product . Took 1 day to paint and another to build it . You won't be disappointed .

I use this with Merchant's row I on opposite sides of a square to simulate small town America. I am definitely sold on Walther's products for quality, and ease of construction.

This kit is so popular that I see it on almost every layout. Just by painting it and the different signage it comes with you can customize it to fit any era layout.

I only used just 2 of the store fronts as a Bank and adjoining Jailhouse. added the security bar kit on the jail....GREAT experience.

adds to the business districts of the town and with the sidewalks already there can go and do streets and alleys from there
